Vol. 15, No. 37             November 26, 2015

  • On November 1, 2015, Hamas posted a statement on its English website, quoting the Palestinian health ministry, accusing the Israel Defense Forces of killing 72 Palestinians in October 2015. Left out of the release were the names of the dead.
  • Of the dead, 82% were killed during Palestinian-initiated violence.
  • During the summer of 2015, 25,000 children attended Hamas’ military training camps in Gaza. On August 5, 2015, senior Hamas officials Mahmoud Al-Zahar and Ismail Haniyeh attended a graduation ceremony at the Gaza City Hamas military camp and encouraged youth to reclaim all of Palestine.  There is little question that many of these youth stormed the fences with Israel in October 2015.
  • Hamas’ counting of these attackers and murderers to boost the number of people killed by the “oppressive Zionist regime” is Hamas’ disingenuous way of falsely demonizing Israel and seeking to undermine Israel’s ability to defend itself.  It is time to stop the victimization of terrorists.

On November 1, 2015, Hamas posted a statement on its English website, quoting the Palestinian health ministry, accusing the IDF of killing 72 Palestinians in October 2015: 17 Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip, 54 from the West Bank and one from pre-1967 Israel.1  Intentionally left out of the release were the names of people they claimed were killed by Israeli forces in an apparent attempt to make their claim harder to contradict.  However, with lists produced by Al-Jazeera2 and the Middle East Monitor3 of the Palestinians killed in October  as well as reports from other media sources, it was possible to recreate Hamas’ list.

West Bank and pre-1967 Israel

Included in the count of West Bank and pre-1967 Israel residents were 38 Palestinians who were killed during or after attempting to kill Israeli civilians and soldiers.  Hamas did not bother to differentiate between the innocent Palestinian civilians who found themselves in the line of fire and terrorists who were killed while trying to stab Israeli civilians and soldiers.  This is due to a longstanding Hamas policy that considers every Palestinian civilian as a soldier in the fight against Israel.  This policy is found in Article 12 of the 1988 Hamas Charter; “Resisting and overpowering the enemy become the individual duty of every Moslem, male or female.”5  As a result there is no need to differentiate between innocent civilians, “lone wolf” terrorists and full-fledged Hamas operatives.  In a sense, they are committing post-mortem perfidy.

The names of the people killed during or after committing a terrorist act in the West Bank and pre-1967 Israel are as follows:

  1. Qassem Mahmoud Sabaneh, 20-year-old male, October 30, in Nablus.

  38. Muhannad Halabi, 19-year-old male, October 3, in east Jerusalem.17

Six of the other casualties occurred while throwing rocks, firebombs or while taking part in violent altercations:

  1. Ihab Jihad Hanani, 19-year-old male, October 16, killed in clashes in Beit Furik near Nablus, in which protesters threw firebombs and stones at Israeli security forces, the same day that rioters set fire to the Tomb of Joseph in Nablus.
  2. Motaz Zawahra, 21-year-old male, October 13, killed in clashes with Israeli security in Daheisha refugee camp.
  3. Ahmad Sharaka, 13-year-old male, October 11, killed during a violent protest outside Beit El.18
  4. Ibrahim Ahmad Mustafa Aoud, 27-year-old male, died October 10, of a head injury he received after being hit with a rubber bullet in a violent clash with Israeli soldiers on October 8 in Beit Ummar.19
  5. Ahmad Salah, 24-year-old male, October 9,  killed in clashes in Shuafat refugee camp, east Jerusalem.
  6. Wissam Faraj, 20-year-old male, was killed on October 8, during a riot in which thousands threw firebombs and rocks at Israeli forces in the Shuafat refugee camp, east Jerusalem.20
  7. Huthayfa Othman Suleiman, 18-year-old male, October 5, killed in clashes in Tulkarem in which hundreds of Palestinians threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at Israeli forces.21

Two others’ death was attributed to tear gas inhalation:

  1.  Hashem Younis Hashem Al Azzeh, 54-year-old male, October 21, in Hebron.
  2.  Huda Darwish, 65-year-old female, October 19, east Jerusalem.

Unique cases:

  1. On October 30, a male eight month-old baby by the name of Ramadan Mohammad Faisal Thawabta died in Beit Fajjar.  The Palestinian Health Ministry claimed that the baby had been killed by tear gas inhalation.  However, Beit Jala Governmental Hospital officials stressed that the cause of death was unclear, and that it may have very well been due to a previously diagnosed birth defect from which the infant suffered.22
  2. On October 29, Nadim Shqeirat, a 52-year-old man from Jabal al-Mukabir suffered a heart attack.  A Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance picked him up.  Outside of Jabal al-Mukabir he was transferred to an Israeli intensive care ambulance, where he was declared dead on the way to the hospital.  Hamas counted this as a death caused by Israel since the ambulance was delayed by Israeli checkpoints for several minutes, according to a Nuran Association spokesperson.23
  3. On October 13, Riyad Ibrahim Dar Yusuf, a 46-year-old man, died of a heart attack near Ramallah.  His family claimed that the heart attack occurred after being beaten by Israeli forces.  The Israel Defense Force, however, had no record of any such beating and after an investigation came to the conclusion that the claims that IDF forces were involved were false.24
  4. On October 25, Danya Irshayyid, a 17-year-old female, was killed in Hebron H2.  Amnesty International stated that according to unidentified witnesses, Israeli border police shot her while she raised her hands in surrender during a security check; however, the police claimed she had pulled out a knife, intending to attack the border police present.25
  5. Abdel Rahman Abdullah, a 13-year-old male, was killed October 5, while IDF soldiers tried to suppress a violent protest in the Aida refugee camp.  He was killed by a bullet which had ricocheted off the floor, after an IDF officer attempted to fire a warning shot.26

In addition to the 52 people mentioned, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the “execution” of Ahmed Manasra, 13-year-old, who along with his cousin, Hassan Manasra (who was mentioned earlier in this list), stabbed two Israeli civilians, including a 13-year-old, in west Jerusalem. In response, Israel released an image of Ahmed Manasra in the Israeli Hadassah-Ein Karem Hospital, alive and well.  It is impossible to tell whether or not Hamas counted him as one of the dead since Hamas did not publish a list of the people they claim were killed.27  If they did count him then the number of Palestinian residents of the West Bank and Israel which Hamas claims were killed by Israeli forces reaches 53.

Gaza Strip

On August 5, 2015, senior Hamas officials Mahmoud Al-Zahar and Ismail Haniyeh attended the graduation ceremony of the Gaza City Hamas military summer camp.  Thousands of Palestinian youths participated in the ceremony.  There, in an interview with AFP, Zahar warned of a new round of violence if the siege on Gaza were not broken.28  True to his words, in October 2015, dozens of violent riots were staged along the Israel-Gaza border.  There is little doubt that a large number of the graduates of this camp and other similar camps participated in these riots.  Participants in these violent riots accounted for 15 of the 17 Gazan residents killed in October 2015.

The names of the people who were killed in the Gaza strip while participating in violent riots are:

Khalil Abu Obeid with Hamas Prime Minister Haniyeh
Khalil Abu Obeid with Hamas Prime Minister Haniyeh (Hamas website)
  1. Yahya Karira, a 20-year-old male, died on October 24, from wounds which he sustained in a riot near the Israeli border a week earlier.31
  2. Khalil Abu Obeid, a 25-year-old male, on October 24, died of injuries he sustained in a riot near the Israeli border adjacent to the Al-Bureij refugee camp.  While being treated for his injuries in al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City he was visited by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.32
  3. Ahmad Al-Sarhi, a 27-year-old male, was killed on October 20, while participating in a riot at the Israeli border adjacent to the Al-Bureij refugee camp.33
  4. Shawqi Jabr Obeid, a 37-year-old male, died on October 16, from injuries he received on October 9 in clashes with Israeli soldiers near the Israel-Gaza border.

On October 16, two Palestinians were killed while participating in a violent riot near the Erez border crossing, throwing rocks, burning tires and threatening to break through into Israel.34

  1. Yahiya Abd al-Qader Farhat, a 24-year-old male, was killed on October 16
  2. Mahmoud Hatim Hmeid, a 22-year-old male, was killed on October 16.

On October 9, two separate riots occurred, one near Nahal Oz border crossing and one near the Israeli border east of Khan Younis, which lasted two days, in which six Palestinians were killed.  In both riots burning tires were rolled towards Israeli soldiers stationed there and rocks were thrown.  On that same day at the Erez border crossing, a group of Palestinian rioters attempted to break into Israel.35

  1. Jihad Al-Ubeid, a 22-year-old male, died October 10 from wounds he sustained at the Israeli border near al-Shujaiyeh.36
  2. Shadi Hussam Dawla, a 20-year-old male, was killed on October 9 at the Israeli border near al-Shujaiyeh.
  3. Ahmad Al-Harbawi, a 20-year-old male, was killed on October 9 at the Israeli border near al-Shujaiyeh.37
  4. Abed Al-Wahidi, a 20-year-old male, was killed on October 9 at the Israeli border near al-Shujaiyeh.
  5. Muhammad Al-Raqeb, a 15-year-old male, was killed on October 9 near Khan Younis.
  6. Ziad Nabil Sharaf, a 20-year-old male, was killed on October 9 near Khan Younis.
  7. Adnan Mousa Abu Alan, a 19-year-old male, was killed on October 9 near Khan Younis.

On the second day of the riot in Khan Younis two Palestinians were killed:38

  1. Marwan Barbakh, a 12-year-old female, was killed October 10.
  2. Khalil Othman, a 15-year-old male, was killed on October 10.

Overall there were only two uninvolved civilians killed in the Gaza strip.  They were a mother and her daughter, killed when their house collapsed after an Israeli air strike hit a nearby Hamas weapons manufacturing site near Gaza City.39

  1. Noor Hussein, age 30, was killed on October 10.
  2. Rahaf Yahya Hussein, age 2, was killed on October 10.

In Conclusion

In total, this list includes 70 names.  Of those, an overwhelming majority was killed while carrying out terrorist attacks, and they were killed by Israelis practicing their right of self-defense. Using these attackers to boost the number of people killed by the “oppressive Zionist regime” is Hamas’ disingenuous way of falsely demonizing Israel and seeking to undermine Israel’s ability to defend itself and its citizens from both physical attacks and false propaganda.  It is time to stop the victimization of terrorists.
